The Lake Union area is one of the best places in Seattle for a newbie photographer to hone his/her skills. You can easily spend weeks shooting from around the various spots around Lake Union. In this entry I am going to talk about Gasworks park. Gasworks park is a neat little park located on the north side of lake union. Gasworks park has an interesting history. I would encourage you to read more information about the park and learn about its history.

There is a little hillock with a great view. Make sure to climb up to the top of the hillock and take in all the fabulous views! You can also use the green hills as a interesting foreground to compose downtown Seattle. Gasworks park is also one of the best place to watch the July 4th fireworks. The park is usually packed with thousands of people!

Information about Gasworks park
Directions to Gasworks park.

Gasworks park has fabulous views of downtown Seattle during sunset. My preference is to shoot during the Duck dodge sailboat races which are every tuesday. For more detailed information about the schedule of the races refer to www.duckdodge.org. It gives you great opportunities to use the sailboats as foreground.

My favorite time is the few minutes before sunset when sunlight is reflecting off the downtown skyscrapers - it makes the buildings appear like a giant mirror. A graduated neutral density filter will be very useful here.

The rusty old structures from the Seattle Gas company are still around in the park. They present some fabulous macro opportunities during sunrise and sunset.
